When I take a step back, and really observe the world around me, I found out that my purpose is not to take photographs; instead it is to create documentation of the life around me through photos. The passage of time is a wild thing.
In this photo, Lauren stands within her grandfather’s greenhouse, constructed and built with his own two hands, many years ago. This greenhouse was a part of her upbringing, and one must think it played a part in ingraining a love for ordinary objects, like the shovel and the hoe, and allowing her to see dirt as a magical thing.
Lauren would grow up to be not only a lover of flowers, not only a wildflower herself, but a florist who would deliver flowers to dozens of happy brides every year. The greenhouse stands not only as a part of her heritage, but a precious heirloom of the family and a symbol of her fate.
Isn’t it crazy how it all comes full circle?
I take another step back and realize JUST how important it is to continue this documentation. Will future generations of her family stand within this greenhouse, let alone see it? Will they know the impact it had on their family? The point of the photograph isn’t just memory that lives on, but the stories that can be told and shared for years to come. Ask yourself, what stories do you want to tell?
